Sunrise ceremony at Lake Hintersee in Germany
Let me tell you – there isn’t much that makes me excited about setting my alarm for 3:30 AM. But if it’s to watch a stunning sunrise like at this Lake Hintersee elopement, I’m all for it.
Ana and João came from Portugal to Germany and dreamt of eloping in the German Alps. As their elopement photographer and planner, I talked about several location options with them, and lastly we settled on the picturesque Hintersee in Berchtesgaden Nationalpark. And to avoid the crowds (although we were there outside of the peak season), we also decided to plan this at sunrise, just to be safe.

Hiking along Lake Hintersee to the Zauberwald Forest
After a lovely pre-wedding shoot the day before at the summit of Jenner Mountain, next to Lake Königssee, we met for their Lake Hintersee elopement at 5 AM the following morning. We quickly walked to their ceremony location I had chosen the day before and, just as planned, had the entire place to ourselves – and watched in awe as the sun was slowly illuminating the mountains behind.
It was the absolute perfect place for them to share their vows and rings, after which we made our way around the lake for some more photos. Our last stop was the Zauberwald (translates to “Magic Forest”) right next to the lake.
