Epic Faroe Islands Elopement in May

Why eloping in the stormy Faroe Islands is one of the wildest things you’ll ever do

There’re destinations that are beautiful, and then there’re destinations that feel like the world is putting on a show for you. To no surprise, the Faroe Islands are that second kind of place and had therefore been one of my top 3 bucket list destinations for elopements for many, many years.

This one has been a day I’ll talk about for ages. We braved sideways rain, hail and the strongest winds I’ve ever felt. And it still was everything we could’ve hoped for and more. What a day.

The Faroe Islands are such a wild, breathtaking, edge-of-the-world kind of place, you need to be there to actually feel it. If you’ve ever dreamt of eloping with a true adventure, this stunning little group of islands is just the place for you and will exceed every expectation you didn’t even know you had.

Dreaming of your own wedding in the Faroe Islands?

Let’s make it happen:

Saksun, Hvíthamar, Fossa & Klakkur – One unforgettable day of exploring the Faroe Islands

Every single one of the 18 islands that make up the Faroe Islands offers views that would be a dream for any elopement wedding. Not all of them are easy to get to, though. On this particular day, we kept things a bit simpler logistically and stuck to the central part of the country, with locations that were accessible without too much effort.

The iconic ancient turf houses in Saksun easily made the cut and were the perfect place for us to start the day. Conveniently, the country’s highest waterfall “Fossa” happens to be on the very same island too.

Above the small village of Funningur on Eysturoy, a viewpoint unlike any other waited for us after what was barely a 15-minute hike. The views at Hvíthamar, with maybe the most sweeping panorama in the entire archipelago, are unlike anything you’ve ever seen, I promise.

Last on the list was Klakkur, an incredible mountaintop near Klaksvík. A short but steep hike led us to some weirdly passive-aggressive sheep and a stunning 360° view of the surrounding fjords. This was also where we were quite literally blown away by the wind. It was SO strong, my god. But man was it worth it.

What to expect when you elope in the Faroe Islands in May / spring

May is easily one of the best months to elope in the Faroe Islands. It’s also one where the weather is the most unpredictable, though. You can tell winter has barely ended and most mountains will still be snowcapped (how beautiful for photos!!). It’s the time of year where you’ll get all four seasons in a single day, so preparation and flexibility are key.

Your bravery of choosing spring over summer will however be rewarded ten times over by much, much fewer crowds. With the right planning and an experienced elopement photographer (shameless hint lol), even the most popular places will become an option for your day. The same is true for other off-season months like April or October, by the way.

It’ll most likely not be a perfect-sunny-weather-wedding whatsoever, but for adventurous couples who are up for anything, it’s as extraordinary as it gets.
